Historically, treatment for cases of moderate-severe gum disease involved using a scalpel to filet open your gums, attempting to cut away the infected and diseased gum tissue and then stitching your gums back together. This mode of treating gum disease is still widespread today and works, but has some major drawbacks. It is painful, can cause significant recession, removes healthy gum tissue as well as diseased tissue, doesn't kill the bacteria in the gum pocket, and can cause you to have a long recovery time.
These problems are now solved by treating gum disease with the FDA approved Periolase LASER and the revolutionary treatment called LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure). The advantages of LANAP are less pain, less swelling, less tissue removed, less down time, and less recovery time. The LASER light energy also targets and kills the bacteria in your gum pockets that cause gum disease. The reasons we use the Periolase LASER and the LANAP treatment protocol for treating gum disease are to remove only the diseased tissue without removing any of the healthy tissue, maintain the height of tissue around the teeth and to minimize pain and discomfort to the patient.
